raphael 21:45, 4 January 2013 (UTC): Continuing the remarks about commercial companies, satellite images, and commercial companies on the main page:

Adding satellite images as a source sounds reasonable. Adding commercial companies as a source is also reasonable but I think the term itself needs more thinking about in the context of the other categories (specifically, I'm thinking about classifying satellite data supplied by a commercial company).

"Information from the internet": We can make this "industry publications" and define it as "shipping and other industry publications and web sites".

One possible resolution of the question of law versus regulation is to combine the two into one term, e.g., make item 3 "national law or regulation", defined as "legislative or administrative law or regulation passed by a national government or national regulatory agency or authority". This has the advantage that the encoder or mariner does not have to think about the difference - unless the group believes the distinction matters to the mariner?

jens 09:38, 4 March 2013 (UTC) Should we extend the "publication" definition to include images/photographs/graphics? That would simplify the set of attributes for GRAPHC.

raphael 20:26, 4 March 2013 (UTC): I agree that graphics and charts should be included in the definition of "publication". The rest are fine, only insert "legislative and administrative" in the definition of item 5 (that is, make it like item 3 so no one wonders whether that difference is significant).

jens 06:07, 11 March 2013 (UTC) I hope I have got it now.

raphael 00:20, 18 July 2014 (UTC): definitions of enumerates 12, 13, 14 are needed

raphael (talk) 04:40, 6 February 2017 (CET): Proposed definition: The type of source (see GI Registry).

Wondering whether 1-6 can be simplified into just two:

  • 1: law or regulation: treaty, convention, or international agreement; law or regulation issued by a national or other authority
  • 2: official publication: publication not having the force of law, issued by an international organisation or a national or local administration

raphael (talk) 05:19, 23 May 2018 (CEST): This was agreed in March 2017(!), SORTYP page and GI registry need to be updated, the S-122 FC already has the new definitions, copied and pasted below, along with the codes.
Code 10 is also different in the registry perhaps to avoid a collision with surveyType=6, but I don't have a record of NIPWG discussing a change to code 10.

  • 'law or regulation'

treaty, convention, or international agreement; law or regulation issued by a national or other authority 1

  • 'official publication'

publication not having the force of law, issued by an international organisation or a national or local administration 2

  • 'remotely sensed images'

information obtained from satellite images 10

Note: codes 3, 4, 5, 6, are not currently used in the FCs.
