Neither the OED nor Wikipedia definitions define quite how we are using the word, so I made a hybrid definition.
FYI, from the OED:
telecommunication: communications over long distances esp. by electrical means such as telegraphy, telephony, or broadcasting; the branch of technology concerned with this.
Also - a means or channel of such communications.
